The Steelers and Troy Polamalu announced their long-rumored contract extension this afternoon. It will be a while before the total details of the deal are announced, but a five-year, $33 million extension ensures that Polamalu is a very well paid safety.
At a little less than $7 million per season, the deal makes Polamalu the highest-paid safety in the league, which has to make Ed Reed a little jealous (Reed previously held the crown with a seven-year, $40 million deal). It would seem to be a heck of a lot to pay for a cover-2 safety if the Steelers do go to more of new coach Mike Tomlin's style over the upcoming seasons, but as Bob Sanders showed last year, a great safety is a great safety no matter what the scheme
